The Curated: Tailored Coat

The Curated’s tailored coat was one of the only new items I added to my wardrobe last year. It’s also by far the most expensive, but after having cheap winter wear out on me after a single season or two of use, I knew it was time to upgrade.

The Curated is a small, woman-owned business that works directly with the factory to product high-quality clothing for a fraction of the price. They also produce most of their clothing with leftover fabric to help cut down on the wastage that is so eponymous with the fashion industry.

Making such an expensive purchase without being able to try it on first can be daunting. Luckily, they have a private Facebook group where many people post their body statistics along with the sizing that they purchased. It really helped when it came I was trying to figure out what size to get.

The Curated carries several different styles of coats. I went with their tailored coat in bone. I liked the more fitted, A-line silhouette and the fact that the pockets weren’t visible on the outside the coat. I got a size S in the coat, and it’s a tad bit more oversized than I expected, especially in the shoulder region. But I prefer that since I’m able to wear much thicker sweaters underneath. For reference, I’m around 5’8, so the only concern I had was whether the sleeves would be too short on me. Personally, I think the sleeves hit just about right on me, but I haven’t worn this coat with a thick sweater yet since this winter hasn’t been cold enough.

While the coat comes with a belt, it does not come with the buckles sewn in. There is a patch of fabric that is the same as the coat that comes with your package. I brought that to my tailor to have the belt loops made from the material. I didn’t want to deal with having to figure out where to store my belt if I wanted to wear the coat open so I opted to have the belt loops sewn on.

I’m absolutely in love with this coat! I’ve worn it every week since I got it last December. I haven’t gotten it dirty, so I can’t speak to how easy it is to clean the coat, but reading reviews on the Facebook group seems like it’s not a problem, even with this lighter color. This coat is well made and so soft; I’ve gotten compliments on it during a few of my outings to the grocery store, haha. The only thing I can think of that may be a downside is that the coat isn’t lined. I don’t like how you could sometimes see the inside of the pocket when I wore the coat unopened. But that’s just a small quip. Overall, I would rate this coat a 9/10. Despite this being shipped from overseas, I actually got this in less than a week, which was exciting!

I’m already saving up to buy one of their Teddy coats and wrapped cardigans for next winter. I’m excited to see what new items the Curated will have in the future.
