Inked Chrysanthemum

I recently took a botanical illustration class on Skillshare by Shaui Lee Bobis on how to draw a chrysanthemum flower in ink. Her breakdown on how to get the layered effect that chrysanthemums are synonymous for make it easy to get it mostly right the first time around.

This was the initial thumbnail sketch I did in my sketchbook as I was following along with the class for the first time. I wanted to get a feel for the shapes and how to build upon the layers of petals.

Some of the petal shapes are a bit weird and there definitely could’ve be more variation in the line weight and shading but overall, I’m happy with how this turned out 🙂
